Singapore 2019: [Part 5] Downtown – National Library, Bugis stop, Merlion, and Church

Headed toward the city downtown to the National Library to pick up my cousin from a spoken word poetry contest (she won!). The architecture at The Pod, the events area on the top floor, is kinda cool with the rounded glass walls/windows.

Went to a mall in Bugis for a short break at Starbucks and a little window shopping. [Read Starbucks review here].

Too bad the Great Singapore sale was long over during this time. After fitting some pieces from The Editor’s Closet and the adjacent Pull and Bear boutiques, we headed to the Merlion.

Merlion Plaza is right behind the Raffles Hotel. We needed to hurry up a bit because we were going to hear mass at 7pm Church of Saint Mary and the Angels, a Catholic Church. On the other side of the bay was where we spent this morning, and yesterday’s afternoon – you could see the Singapore flyer, Helix Bridge, Arts Science Museum, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, and Shoppes at Marina Bay (and the stand alone LV boutique). This would have been wonderful at night.

I dub thee the Ultimate Singapore Tourist Pose – catching the water from the Merlion’s mouth to yours! But nah, I did a toned down variation just catching the water with my paper bag.

Chairs were similar to the one in Japan, seating space was defined per individual instead of a straight bench with no divisions. There were song books tucked in the back pocket of the kneeler in front of you. Thinking back, I guess those were also song books in Japan (I could not read any because I attended the Japanese mass). The flow of the celebration was the same as back home. But here, after you take the Holy Host, you could opt to drink wine from a communal goblet which is wiped and turned to a different area after every person. One goblet per communion line.

It was night time when the mass finished. Looking at the chapel from the outside, you can see the whole interiors as the front wall was all glass. The lamps give off an illusion as if they were floating candles.
